Pilates
The Pilates Method (or simply Pilates), pronounced /pɪˈlɑ:ti:z/ is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. As of 2005 there are 11 million people who practice the discipline regularly and 14,000 instructors in the United States.
Pilates called his method Contrology, because he believed his method uses the mind to control the muscles. The program focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and which are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and aim to strengthen the deep torso muscles.

Salubrion Enso Clock Meditation Zen TimerReviewsJust received my Enso Timer. I purchased it for meditation. The good: the chime is lovely and perfect for ending a session. The (very) bad: the backlight flashes right before the chime starts. Based on the prior reviews, this is a new "feature". It does not seem to be optional. Since I usually meditate at night, in the dark, the backlight ends up startling me out of the meditation. This mitigates the efficacy of the chime sound, which is the primary reason I purchased the device. Ironically, the backlight is pretty much useless when setting up a session, as it only stays on for 2 seconds, and does not illuminate the buttons in any case. I love using the timer for mediatation, and it's nice to wake in the morning to a gentle gong. My only quible is the price - $100 is a lot for a plastic timer/clock, even with all the nice electronic features. But mine was a gift, and as such is greatly appreciated. The sound chimes are great, it's easy to use, and looks good, but the stop button is HORRIBLE. This may be hard for me to describe so that you can picture it, but I'm going to try. If you see the picture the stop button which is represented by a red square is shaped like a rectacle and curles over the clock a bit- that's the shape... So it's long as far as buttons go. The problem is that the button UNDERNEATH that is what stops the chiming. (virtually all electrical buttons are like this. The button you press is cosmetic and it's really what's underneath that does the job- Like your computer keyboard. You can remove the J button and you can still type J by pressing the button underneath.) The button underneath the stop button is really small and right in the center while the cosmetic button is long which wouldn't be a big deal if when you pressed it, the pressure distributed evenly across the button- but it DOESN'T. So what ends up happening is if I press ANY spot on the button other than the exact center it doesn't do anything and I have to keep pressing it until I hit the right spot. Since I used this primarily for my meditation practice this was a big deal because when the bell chimed and I was all relaxed because it signaled the end of my meditation I would instantly get all stressed again over trying to turn the thing off. It's also not the most robust device. I took it traveling once and it got a little wet. Seriously it was nothing more than just a splash of water that got on it in the rain and I dried it right away. Yet still the backlight never worked again after that. I can't use it for meditation because of the stressful stop button so I use it to time my tea brewing now. If they fixed the button it would be just about perfect. The clock arrived quickly with no problems at all. The tone of the chimes is pleasant. I love the portability of the clock. The case is great. All in all I am pretty pleased. This little device is just what I was hoping it would be. Great for a gentle morning wake-up, a gentle end to sitting practice, and a wonderful timer for Yin Yoga practice with, in my case, 10 three-minute holding intervals each followed by a 1-minute resting interval. This is just what I wanted and it fits the bill. I did not find it hard to set up at all, and I confess that I have trouble with programming my digital watch--so there you go. There are only two things I would recommend altering in the design. The first would be the font of the numbers themselves...they are quite thin and small and can not be read from very far away. I would make them bolder for easier reading from a distance. Maybe not a stopwatch font, but something a little more fluid (though I don't know what the mechanical limitations are on this). Also, the little plastic stand that comes out of the back and keeps it upright--I would make that a wee bit wider because it is easily knocked over by the hand reaching in the dark to turn it off in the morning. Those things would make it perfect for me, but I really like it as is. And yes, I realize this is seriously defeating the purpose of an Enso clock, but I kind of wish it was square or rectangular so it wouldn't be so tippy. Maybe an optional model sans the circular display that was flat on the bottom... The bottom line is that--problems aside--I really like it and would replace it immediately and without hesitation if I lost it. Average Rating:![]() |

Winsor Pilates 5 VHS Set: Bun & Thigh Sculpting, Ab Sculpting, Accelerated Body Sculpting, Basics Step-By-Step, 20 Minute WorkoutReviewsExercise is hard work. Pilates is not easy. As long as my remaining VCR holds out, I'll keep trying pilates. I'm still working on the basics. The Bun & Thigh Sculpting, Ab Sculpting, and Accelerated Body-Sculpting will have to wait until I'm in better shape. If you're in good shape and want the Winsor Pilates series cheap, this is the way to go. But as a former couch potato, I feel well past my prime after a workout. It's both good and bad. Winsor Pilates Bun & Thigh SculptingReviewsI have been using Mari Winsor's 20 Minute Workout for about a year and seen amazing results to my hips/thighs from just the few leg exercises contained in that video. So I'm looking forward to seeing the results that will come from this one! The workout starts with the same 3 leg exercises done in 20 Minute Workout, but then progresses to inner thigh work and a series of leg lifts that will literally have you on the floor groaning and moaning. Mari takes you through these exercises quickly and efficiently. Although it's touted as 20 minutes, it feels more like 15. But those are 15 minutes well spent as you can feel that every one of these exercises is having an effect. Also, Mari knows just when to give you that little encouragement that keeps you going to do the last leg lift when you feel like screaming. That woman is some kind of (evil?) genius! As a busy mom, I like the video because it's so quick, I can slip it in whenever I have an extra 15 minutes and know that I'm really doing something. Well worth the money! I bought a complete set of these workout DVDs for my wife a couple of years back. The entire set is exceptional but this specific workout is her favorite. It does a lot in just a short time. She says it is the best she has ever used and she has been a gym "freak" for 20 years. The only reason I am looking for another copy is one of the boys misplaced her DVD when getting a movie for their grandmother and we cannot find it. Therefore I am scrounging to find a replacement..........even if it has to be VHS for the time being. Get it, use it, you won't be sorry. Average Rating:![]() |

The Firm Wave KitReviewsI love the wave! I've never used the firm before but it was recommended to me through a friend who has the old fanny lifter set. We both bought it and love it! It really does work your body more while doing the same exercises. I followed the calendar that comes with the set and they weren't lying when they said see results in 10 workouts. I lost 1/2 and inch off my waist and a 1/2 an inch off my thigh. That doesn't seem like much but in a week and a half?? More than the results I love the way I feel now! I have more energy and my legs and back no longer ache. After I bought this and loved it so much I went out and bought the firm weights kit and yoga kit. The weights come with four more workout DVDs which are a nice change if you get too bored, and the yoga is like a thirty minute cool down, very nice. The things which so great about the DVDs is how fast they go. Once you get the hang of it you couldn't imagine going slower, you'd get so bored, but it took me a solid two weeks to get it down right. Also I don't think the cool down is any where near long enough. After the longer work outs I do the yoga. If your looking to get in shape buy this!!! I have many of The Firm workouts and this one is lots of fun! It takes a little bit to get your balance but once you do you can really get a good workout. In the past, I have found the FiRM products to be too hard for me to complete. THis one was different and had a basic understanding CD as well as more advanced options but I was able to complete and use the product right away. I purchased the wave after seeing the commercials of course . Who can miss how fun it looks to work out on the wave . It is challanging once your'e on it , but it only comes with 2 DVDs that don't show much variety , I mean you get bored from the 2nd or 3rd time and your body gets kinda used to the challange. The introductory DVD is just a waste ! They should have included the 10 mins in one of the other DVDs rather than making a big deal about nothing. I enjoyed working out on the wave mostly when its used AS A WAVE :) hate the dancing around it part too . One big negative point about it , is that it hurts so bad when you sit or lye on the wave without any covering . The plastic is very harsh and slippery so I have to use the small matt or sometimes another cushion to make the exercises more comfortable. My overall experience is a 4 , because I feel more routines should be created for such an amazing idea and the material itself should be a bit made a bit softer on the top so sitting on it doesn't feel like sitting on rocks ! I tried this product because I want to shape my body. I was very disappointed when I started the DVD because it's very fast paced and there are no instructions on the steps before it starts there is a ten minute tutorial with basic use of the wave but not the moves. Not impressed. Wish I could get my money back. Average Rating:![]() |

Element: Pilates Weight Loss for BeginnersReviewsGreat DVD. No nonesense, just gets right into it. Before you know it you've done 50 mins, you're sweating bullets and your legs are so wobbly you can't walk. Anyone who has not tried pilates must try this DVD first. Such a great way to excercise! A bit disappointed with DVD. Thought it would be more slow pace since it stated that it was for beginners. I haven't exercise for while and this video seemed to be designed more for people who exercise often. I have a few Pilates dvd's, and none even come close to comparing to the complete perfection of this dvd. She explains moves clearly, without going too fast or too slow. Great for beginners or intermediate. Definite 5 star! Wish she had more! I enjoyed the video and will be using it. Seller was efficient and expedited my order. My niece asked me to order this for her to give to a friend for Christmas and it was shortly before Christmas that we ordered. We were able to track the package so she knew when it would be at my house and she camped out there that day and was very happy to get it before Christmas. Hopefully her friend liked it. Exhale: Core Fusion Body SculptReviewsIn a few words:I hate this dvd.Like others said ,you have to watch TV all the time to see how you have to do the execise.I hate the way they talk, the way they explain everything,I don't know,I just don't get them. Sorry....... This seems to be a great video for getting into shape, however, it was a little tough for me. I am 49 years old and I do Pilates on a reformer and other strength exercises regularly, but this one killed my butt. I should give it another try -- going on vacation soon. If I was guaranteed that I could look like the woman on the video, I would definately start using it again. I ordered this DVD based on an Amazon recommendation. When I first put this DVD in and was watching it I was thinking "oh, this is too easy" and I also found it a bit irritating that their instruction is voiced over rather than them talking live while they're doing the exercises. However once I started doing the exercises and my muscles started BURNING I changed my tune... so simple and so effective. And after a while the voice-over didn't bother me at all. This is a great workout that goes by quickly and will challenge your muscles immediately, I like it especially because sometimes I'm just not in the mood to do cardio which all my other DVDs (except my pilates DVD) have. The only negative is that (like other people have said) is that the breathing/positioning instructions take a bit too long and I'd rather that we just got right into doing the exercise. However, I'm going to see what other DVDs they have that people recommend. This exercise video will kick you into shape fast. I started seeing results immediately. It tightens and tones but does not bulk up muscles. It is alot of small movement and I love the 10 minute sections, even though I do all 5 sections each time. There are no dumb comments throughout like in most exercise videos that piss me off everytime I use them! I usually do pilates and this does incorporate some pilates and yoga. Within a week was able to do all of the movements. I highly reccommend. I generally consider myself to be in athletic shape. This is a great video to jump start your muscles and put them to work in a different way. Holy COW! I couldnt even finish all the segments the first time. WOW! Great product, looking forward to trying another Core FUsion video soon. Average Rating:![]() |

Manduka BlackMatPRO 71-Inch Yoga and Pilates MatReviewsI wish I listened to recommendations I had been given and bought this mat prior to trying two other brands. I am using the mat for a cardio/plyometric workouts as well as for yoga. My knees need a little TLC and they are so much happier since I have been using this mat. I think this is a great option for at home, but it's a little heavy to be carting to classes on public transportation. Lovely, high quality mat. Manduka provides great customer service, and the mat has a guarantee no matter where you buy it. Manduka mats have the longest break-in time of any mat I've owned, but they are sooooo worth it! This is a great mat, I really recommend it, but if you are from the ones that sweat too much, it's slippery with a lot of sweat! Still I love it because I mostly bought it because of the cushion. :) My mother is the hardest person to buy presents for. However, she started to take yoga classes last year and really likes it! So, when Christmas came around I knew exactly what she would like- a yoga mat. I looked on Amazon and this mat seemed to have the best of everything- it's thick, long, and had great reviews. When I gave it to my mom, she was so excited. Her mood after yoga class was completely different however. She told me that she had the worst experience with this yoga mat. She couldn't hold her positions because she was slipping and sliding all over the place. We contacted the company to see why this was and they simply told us that the mat needed 6 months to be "broken in". In my opinion, you shouldn't have to put up with slipping and sliding for on a mat even if it is a new one. This was a definite disappointment! There is a huge difference from this mat and the standard yoga mat. Love how thick it is. Would reccommend to anyone who does yoga on a consistant basis. Average Rating:![]() |

TKO Anti Burst Fitness Ball Set 75cmReviewsI ordered this size because I wanted it to use at my desk at work. I used a co-workers ball - same size but different manufacturer and his was very comfortable and was the right size for my height. This one is about 2 inches shorter and that really makes a difference when I try to use it to sit on. I've put about as much air in it as I feel comfortable doing and I won't be using it as it hurts my back when I do. Very disappointed. good quality product at a decent price. Make sure you purchase the right size for your body! I have had plenty of fitness balls but out of all of them this one is the best. The material used to make this ball is very strong and I believe it will stand the test of time. I ordered the 75cm ball because I am 6 foot 3, this is very important when picking out a fitness ball. When looking for a fitness ball make sure you buy one based on your height because it will make a difference in your workout routine. TKO anti burst fitness ball is a great addition to my workout, I recommend it to anyone wanting to buy a fitness ball that will be very reliable. Plus it comes with a hand held pump which is a great addition. Does everything it says it does. Wan't expecting the color to be a true blue. I have two exercise balls -- one for home and one for work. This is the ball that replaced my office chair at work. I sit on it daily, frequently bounce on it when no one is around, and it has rolled around my floor with coworkers a couple of times. I've only inflated it once (the initial time) in the time I've had it -- over three months!! I weigh about 130lb (+/-) so I don't add a *ton* of constant weight on the ball. It has lost *some* air (it's not perfect after all), but it's still very firm. (I will probably re-inflate it this week or next.) Three additional bonuses about the ball: (1) since it's a dark color it doesn't pop out at people as they walk by me at work; (2) it's neither sticky nor overly smooth; and (3) it's anti-burst. The ball has a good texture that keeps you in place but doesn't pick up lint/dust. Some balls seem to attract it. Also, if you've seen that episode of "The Office" ([...]) you can appreciate the importance of an anti-burst ball. I haven't tested out this feature (and don't plan on it!), but I am glad that it is there since ANY stability ball can be popped. The exercise ball that I have at home (GoFit) has lost air much quicker and I don't use it 1/10th as frequently! When I replace my GoFit, I'll definitely go with another TKO! Average Rating:![]() |

1/4 Inch Ultra Thick Yoga MatReviewsThis mat works well and was a great price. I recommend it to anyone. Very pleased with this mat, i bought it for a gift and it is good quality and was a great price. I really like this mat - it's a little thicker than I am used to, but that is fine. It is nice and long, and just sticky enough. The only problem I have with it in any way is the color. TAN it is not! It is the most horrid pale peachy flesh color - it is almost embarrasing. I feel like I should put some tanning lotion on it! They said that this mat weighs 4 lbs but the shipping weight is 3.5. How is that possible? Mat is great. No chemical smell and no coating to wash off. Color advertised doesn't exactly match what I received, but it's OK. Average Rating:![]() |

Treat Your Own Rotator CuffReviewsA thousand thank yous to Mr. Johnson for being one of the very few self-help-book authors to base all of his recommendations on well-designed scientific studies. On this point alone, Mr. Johnson's book stands head-and-shoulders above nearly all others of its ilk. A job very-well done! The next reason that I really like this book is that it only takes a few minutes per day to do the exercises. Yes, folks, rehabilitating your shoulders can really be done without needing to place the rest of your life on hold to make time for endless physical-therapy visits and countless mind-numbingly-boring exercises. While the exercises are still mind-numbingly-boring, you can finish them up well before your favorite news program has finished its coverage of the war in Afghanistan and moved on to the war in Iraq! And are the exercises in the book effective? I have to admit that as soon as I realized that they were based on actual scientific evidence, my placebo response went into full swing, and my shoulders felt better before I had even started the exercises! However, I've now been doing the exercises for around three months, long-enough for the placebo response to wear off, and my shoulders have definitely improved. The trick for me is to be consistent and do the exercises as specified. I found that it helped to read the book a second time, because I had missed and forgotten important details. I highly recommend this book! This book gives great insight as to the working of the shoulder,as well as all of the connecting tissues. This is not written on such a level that you will not understand the text, it is clear cut with direct ideas, that will save you having to go to a rehab center and pay big bucks to learn. I would suggest buying this book if you ever had a shoulder injury. I BOUGHT THIS TO HELP ME WITH SHOULDER PAIN FROM TOO MUCH SQUASH THE BOOK IS FULL OF GREAT EXERCISES AND I WAS ENCOUAGED TO USE IT MORE AND MORE WITH THE EXERCISES AND SOME MASSAGE THERAPY I WAS BACK ON THE SQUASH COURT WITHIN 8 WEEKS I FOUND IT EASY TO READ AND VERY HELPFUL I SUGGEST ANYONE WHO USES IT WITH MASSAGE THERAPY WILL HAVE POSITIVE RESULTS Unlike another critical reviewer here, I think that there is great benefit to understanding how your rotator cuff works before detailing exercises for strengthening it. To this aim, Wikipedia can help greatly. If you can't seem to grasp the information on Wikipedia, maybe this book would be a good bet. However, I, for one, didn't care for having to sort through pages substance-anemic content to cherry-pick the useful bits; it took me a day to review what I should have been able to glean in one hour. For example, do I need, in my book on rotator cuffs, to read three pages about how a randomized controlled trial works? IF I don't already know, then I can look it up. Or put it in a glossary; that's what glossaries are for. Do I need to read wordy, precise details of each study? Cite the study, describe the outcome, and be done with it. _Maybe_ put the details in an appendix; either way, I can look it up later if I like. Do I need constant repetition, reminding, and teaching that appears to be geared toward a child? If you read each of these critiques thinking, "that's exactly what I need!" then you won't be disappointed. "Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff" is not a cheap book, and there honestly isn't a whole lot of content. It _does_ contain some useful information, but getting to this information with the limited table of contents, without section references, with no table of diagrams, with random pointless tangents, and with NO INDEX, can be frustrating. I could have saved over $1500 in doctor and physical therapy bills had I read this book after the first Dr visit. If you have shoulder pain, please don't hesitate, buy this book! I now have an immense respect for Jim Johnson. After 5 months of little progress, I finally found this book and about 6 weeks later I'm back to all my normal sports, full tilt. The research on strength building and stretching in general was mind blowing! Wow, how could this information be so hidden? Unfortunately, too many people profit from non-health. JJ will show you the absolute fastest and most efficient way to fix your shoulder. By all means, get several opinions before getting surgery. Both doctors left surgery on the table when my tear was very minor. Yes, they do not want you to read this book! Jim, if you're reading this, thank you from the bottom of my heart! You are a great man. P.S. Even if you never had any back issues, buy his back book. After you build up core strength in your back (2 minutes, 3 times a week, yes, really) then you only need to do it once a week to maintain that strength. And no stretching needed. A small price to pay to avoid back pain. Average Rating:![]() |

PilatesReviewsI am a Pilates trainer for 10 years and really like the way this manual is sectioned off with mat and apparatus exercises comprehensively addressed. Rael is a master at his craft and he articulates this through his presentations live and through words on the pages of this manual. I find the photos giving visual perspective an essential addition. This manual is a must on the shelf as a reference for any new or season Pilates teacher - I highly recommend. I've purchased lots of books and DVDs on Pilates to supplement my education as a teacher and this is by far the best of them all. Isacowitz groups the exercises by apparatus, gives great cues and imagery, clear instructions and good photos. My favorite and most-used feature is the index ~ you can find exercises for each muscle group, both stretching and strengthening, which is a quick and invaluable resource when planning a workout. If you are only going to buy one tool to help you with Pilates, this is the one. Very reasonably priced, too! This book is a must have for those who like to have great photos and descriptions of the exercises they are attempting. I am a teacher in training and the book was very helpful to me. This book has the most extensive reformer section I have seen so far. I've had a hard time finding reformer exercises. This book has an extension chapter broken down into exercise types and fundamental, intermediate, and advanced. Great value for the price. Great book by an amazing expert. Daisy Fuentes PilatesReviewsI like this game as an alternate with another workout game or two. I am new to pilates and I found the exercises easy to follow and I feel I get good results in terms of flexibility & toning. I alternate it with something with cardio (EA Sports) and more weight-based toning (Jillian). I started with just this game and I noticed increased core strength right away. It may be basic, but it's a nice part of a varied routine if you want to "surprise" your muscles with different types of workouts and keep yourself from getting bored. I agree, the game doesn't always recognize the movements of the remote, but mostly it works ok technically. I have worked out at home for over 15 years with different equipment or DVDS and I find this to be fun & different. My doctor recommended pilates for me. I didn't want to embarrass myself at a gym. This product helps me do the moves correctly and work at my own pace with expert advise. We infused this core workout into the rest of our exercise routine and the whole family loves it. My 8 year old son and 3 year old daughter love to do the exercises with us. Anyone who thought learning expert pilates from a game console is just expecting too much. If you need a bigger challenge go hit the gym. Wii is still a GAME console, meant for FUN. I like the wii Pilates, but there doesnt seem to be very many exercises and most of them are very basic. They do advance up to expert, but its still not a lot of choices and the advance to expert isnt really challenging. I was very excited to get this workout, but have been very disappointed with it. It doesn't have enough exercises and the timing bar keeps showing that I am not doing the moves correctly even though I am staying at the same pace as Daisy. Definitely a waste of my money. : ( Average Rating:![]() |

Let's PilatesReviewsAs a guy just starting to learn pilates, I found this game very helpful. I like that you can create your own routine from the various exercises, and it helped keep me exercising while on vacation. I'm sure it's not as good as many videos out on the market, but the whole point is that you can use this on the DS without needing a DVD player. I have really enjoyed working out with this DS game. The instructions are great and easy to follow. I love the encouragment given by the little creatures that cheer you on and I love the fact that it keeps up with how much time you are exercising. I have done Pilates before and these excercises seem to be the real thing. Peace, Laura This is exactly what I needed to get me working out. I do not like going to gyms or running- especially in winter, and I can never figure out my DVD. When I am in certain positions I cannot see the TV screen anyway. But with the DS I can move it with me, wear earphones, etc. And it travels well! I really like to see and hear clues for proper form and reminders to breathe properly. I can really feel the effect. I do wish there were progressive/ increasing reps (difficulty), and I wish there was less time between each exercise so I feel like I am getting more movement time in. I am please with this fittness product for my Nintendo Ds Lite..I hope other fitness exercises weight lifting, walking, ball fitness ect..will follow suit for the convenience and portability of this product..I can workout any where with it..Thanks I love Pilates and didn't worry very much about the pictures. Simple routines. Simple workout. But it's good to keep up when you're away from home and this game was good for that. No, it's not the same as working out with a personal trainer. But it costs less than ONE session. Average Rating:![]() |

Liquid Mind III: BalanceReviewsChuck Wild is really great on these Cd's. VERY tranquil, and relaxing music. Wonderful for massage, and relaxing activities. This artist is one of the best. Quiet, Slow Chords as smooth as glass. Uplifting. Fabulous. My first Liquid Mind CD and I'm buying more. I acquired this CD back in 2000, but after a lot of use, it just didn't work any more, so I ordered it again, and every client (I'm a massage therapist) that has listened to it says it's the most transforming music I have... It transports you to another world, completely relaxing music, disarming, fluid... what more can I say? After two listens I wondered why I had placed this on my purchase list. The chords, chord progressions and lead up notes kept reminding me of other compositions and left me expecting to hear something else to begin. I found it frustrating to listen to, either actively or passively as background. this CD will not waste space in my library. The interesting cover picture is the only positive I can give. This CD delivers what the title says. Your mind just flows into a relaxed state while and after listening to it. Average Rating:![]() |

Liquid Mind III: Balance, the third in Liquid Mind's elegant series of slow stress-relief music albums, transports the listener to a place of inner peace and deep calm. Like the prior albums (Slow World and Ambience Minimus), Liquid Mind III: Balance is serene and lush, electronic and elegant, and floats the listener along in a gentle healing stream of sound. |

Liquid Mind VII: ReflectionReviewsI have several of Chuck Wild's "Liquid Mind" albums and though it can be said they are similar, "Reflection" is by far my favorite. The songs are the usual slow, slow, SLOOOOWWW tempo that is designed to trigger your brain alpha waves and then lead you into deeper sleep. The songs are somehow a bit prettier on this album. I like to put my earbuds on, set this to play for about 20 minutes and take a catnap whenever I feel stressed. I also like to drift off to sleep at night to this album or to the album that followed this one Liquid Mind VIII SLEEP. I'm not personally a fan of sleep aids of the pharmaceutical kind and this really works for me. Do not play this while driving. I'm serious; it will make you doze off. It's been said that most of the Liquid Mind cd's are rather similar and if you have one, you don't need another. I disagree in this case; if you have any other Liquid Mind albums, this is still a must-have. The album is so beautifully constructed and the compositions just flow into each other seamlessly. In particular, Reflection and My Orchid Spirit are very beautiful. Sad to say, I'm often in slumberland by the time they are playing unless I shuffle the order on my MP3 player. If you don't have any Liquid Mind, this is great relaxation music, fall-asleep music, massage music, love-making music and definitely could work as a CD to put on to coax a tired, cranky child off to bye-bye for a nap or night's sleep. The slow tempo and hesitatingly-moving chords are designed to lull the mind into a deeply relaxed stated. This is good stuff, better than Ambien or a nightcap of Scotch. And much better for you, too. What can I say? I don't believe that there is any such thing as a bad CD by Liquid Mind. This CD is another great release. It really calms you down and puts you at peace with the world. In The Stillness is my favorite. This is like Stars of the Lid. If you listen to this as background music to a TV program, say, Dexter, then it will feel life changing, like you are the main character. Looking for great meditation music? Listen to Liquid Mind's assortment of musical meditation arrangements! I purchased Liquid Mind III years ago it's music became almost sacred to myself and other family members and friends. So, I purchased the entire series! Need I say more?!!!! The music has a great "trademark" sound but each CD has it's own uniqueness. I found it was great anytime you need "background" music. I loved each and every CD by Liquid Mind and will treasure the music always. Thanks to Chuck Wild and all involved in the production of Liquid Mind! Average Rating:![]() |

Slow WorldReviewsThis CD has some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. It is what I would imagine heaven sounds like. Not only that, but it is so relaxing as well. I play it when I meditate and I achieve much deeper states than without it. It is amazing how the sloooooow and beat-free music brings your nervous system into synchrony even without you doing anything. This was the first Liquid Mind CD that I ever listened to. I now have Liquid Mind IV Unity. I like it as well, but out of the two I like Slow World better because it is, well....slower! The only thing that I wish is that it was all one long selection instead of two shorter and one longer one. If you can only buy one ambient music CD, this is the one! All these titles are great.. you really can't find a klinker in the bunch! Just add this one to the list, these are much longer selections however so if you don't like a certain track -- then 1 third of the cd is not usefull to you, but I think you will like all of them! - Jim Ps.. The Serenity CD is my fave.. so far! This cd is perfect for craniosacral work. After a craniosacral session I left this cd in my player and did a few massages. My clients got off the table like zombies! They all commented on the music and said they were more relaxed and enjoyed the massage more than normal. Highly recommended! This is an excellent music CD for deep relaxation, massage, acupuncture treatments, yoga, meditation, or getting the baby to sleep. It maintains a consistent "zoney" quality from beginning to end with no tempo change, no surprises. The instrument is a synthesized keyboard and the chord progressions take long gradual steps up and down. That's it. I use this CD to put yself to sleep at night, after a horrible day. Never fails to relax me, and put my mind at rest. Thanks, Chuck! Average Rating:![]() |

Slow World is the second album of deep relaxation music by Liquid Mind, the name used by Los Angeles composer & songwriter Chuck Wild for his series of very slow stress relief music albums. ToeSox Yoga / Pilates Toe Socks, Organic CottonReviewsGreat idea, but poorly made. Material is thin and very restrictive. They seem to be sized for a very petite foot with long skeleton toes. The toes are tight, way too tight, and I bought both my "correct" size and a pair a size larger. I don't have fat feet, webs, or extra toes ;-), but I do have a wide footprint with short toes. The stiching doesn't "give" at all, there are seams at the toes, and they actually cut off circulation to the toes. Beware if you don't have "perfect" model's feet, or if foot care for a health issue like diabetes is a priority for you. I'm sure they probably fit perfect on some feet, but they didn't work out on mine. This socks worked great. Really anti-slip, comfortable once you get them on (a little bit had but that's always the case with socks that have separate toes). Could use them for a whole yoga class and they really kept my feet warm, and helped me keep my positions and balance.Loved them. Will buy another color eventually. These socks are comfortable and I can do yoga with or without a mat on any surface. The grip is good and I like the toe separation. I bought these because we our yoga class is on a hardwood floor. While barefoot is best, I'm a little squeamish about how clean the floor is. Also it can be a little slick when we're off the mat. Socks work great for yoga. So I tried them in a NIA class - which involves lots of movement and dance moves. No slipping! Last night someone called them my movable, portable yoga mat. When using for the NIA class on carpet, I noticed the socks shifted a little on my feet, i.e. my toes started slipping out. One tug and they were fine. People ask, "Don't your toes feel strange?" I don't notice any strangeness or discomfort. I'd recommend them highly. I appreciate the organic fabric but could have used some extra spandex at the toe joint...too tight for toes to fit all the way so I cannot wear for long period of time. They do okay as far as griping the mat. I probably wouldn't buy this type again. Average Rating:![]() |

ToeSox are an innovative alternative to traditional athletic socks, which form to the contours of your foot while allowing each of your toes to separate. This separation gives your toes the toe wiggling freedom they deserve, as they separate naturally to increase flexibility and strengthen the muscles in the foot... |

American Apparel Women's Stretch Cotton Yoga PantReviewsAfter reading the other reviews and having owned a couple of American Apparel products I was excited to purchase the yoga pants. I also appreciated that these are much less expensive than my usual yoga pants (Moda from Victoria's Secret, which are twice the cost and worth every penny). Here are my issues with these yoga pants: * Cut - more of a legging than a yoga pant (which should be a straighter, flared cut). * Material - much thinner than what other reviewers indicate, again more of a legging material than that of the typical yoga pant. In addition, the material stretches very easily and does not retain shape (creating the saggy bottom syndrome - not sexy). * Length - many other reviewers indicated that the pants arrived too short, I had the opposite problem as these pants were cut for that of a supermodel and were about 5 inches too long. My recommendation is to go for quality and somthing that will last instead of value. I adore the Victoria's Secret yoga pants, they last for years, are incredible sexy, and very well made. These yoga pants are very clingy and cheap looking. They were very unflattering on me. The material was not comfortable. I would not recommend these at all. As one of the reviews stated they are a little see-through. I'm 5'3" and 125 lbs. Ordered small and it is tight but comfortable and good length. Received compliments. This are great yoga pants, very comfortable and they wash up great. Excellent value for money. My oldest daughter is very active and fit, other 3...well size 2x and up so they get sweat pants and a tee for Christmas. Mt eldest loved these and will buy the light blue next year. Stick-e Brands Yoga Stick-e SocksReviewsThis product works very well, but doesn't hold up. I bought two pairs, and both started falling apart after about the fourth yoga class! The sticky stuff cracked and then started coming off in pieces. The socks were far too expensive to be crumbling the first week. The product started coming apart after 1 Yoga session. Would not recommend or buy again. Company offered no refund. Totally disappointed !! I searched for a product that appeared to have the best traction and ordered them. I wore them twice to a theraputic yoga class and the heel cracked. They are still wearable, but very disappointing. I plan to contact the company, but from reading other reviews that have been posted since I purchased...not much satisfaction! Received these as a gift, bunching at heel, but I figured that would change after the first washing. The blue sticky part cracked in several places the second time I used them. When I contacted Aleva Health about this they told me there were no guarantees for this product. I could exchange it for a credit at Aleva Health only. They have no other yoga socks. Considering the cost, this was a disappointment. I will not purchase from this company. My feet are always icy cold in yoga class and I found it incredibly annoying to wear socks since they would slide all over the mat. I was really delighted to find these socks since they both keep my feet warm and don't slide all over the mat or twist on my feet in an aggravating way. The sticky part is really sticky and I don't have to keep reaching down to adjust how the socks are aligning on my feet. My only tiny criticism is that the hole for my pinky toe is too high up so the fabric rubs a bit between my last 2 toes. However, it is only mildly annoying and not really uncomfortable. I wasted nearly $20 on another pair of yoga socks that were completely worthless since they slid and twisted all over my feet, so I'm very grateful these stay in place nicely. That greatly compensates for the less than perfect cut on the pinky toes. Average Rating:![]() |

SPRI ES502R Xertube Resistance Band with Door Attachment and Exercise Charts (Blue, Heavy)ReviewsPurchased this item for my husband, as the bands he was using kept on breaking. He uses it every day and likes it much better than the band. I am a fitness professional and currently live in a building that has only single purpose machines. Having exercise tubes is an easy way to add possibly infinite number of exercises to your routine at a good price. I wouldn't pay more than $15 for any exercise tube, but it is a good investment. This Exercise Band is OK but could be a lot better with a few simple improvements. The handles need to be a little bigger with more padding. Additionally, the door attachment ball (which holds the band to a door frame) definitely needs to be bigger. It's too small and occasionally slips through and can cause an injury. With these few simple improvements, this band would be rated 5 stars. the door attachment is poorly made I didn't notice I had a 1/2 inch gap on my doors when i placed the door attachment on top and i had a pretty long stretch when doing pull-downs with it the door attachment wedge through door and whacked me in chest leaving a very large welt from bands and door attachment so please see that your doors dont have any gaps cause ball from door attachment is made poorly and ball will slide through gap through door and most likely inflect severe pain I was lucky that it didn't hit me on face Suppose to be heavy duty, but really the resisitance is more on the "mild" side, also there are 2 pressed metal pieces that help hold the handles on and one has come loose already (after a months use)I had to take some pliers and press them back together- I didnt pay much for this and you get what you pay for- wouldnt recommend Average Rating:![]() |

History
Pilates was formed by Joseph Pilates during the First World War with the proposal to improve the rehabilitation program for the many returning veterans. Joseph Pilates believed mental and physical health are essential to one another. He recommended a few, precise movements emphasizing control and form to aid injured soldiers in regaining their health by strengthening, stretching, and stabilizing key muscles. Pilates created "The Pilates Principles" to condition the entire body: proper alignment, centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing, and flowing movement.
Joseph Pilates wrote two books concerning the Pilates method, Return to Life through Contrology (1928) and Your Health: A Corrective System of Exercising That Revolutionizes the Entire Field of Physical Education (1934).
Principles
Pilates claimed his method has a philosophical and theoretical foundation. It claims not merely to be a collection of exercises but a method developed and refined over more than eighty years of use and observation. As long as there is no evidence to support those claims, it might still be just a collection of exercises that has been developed and refined over more than eighty years of use and observation.
Mind over matter
According to practitioners, the central aim of Pilates is to create a fusion of mind and body, so that without thinking about it the body will move with economy, grace, and balance. The end goal is to produce an attention-free union of mind and body. Practitioners believe in using one's body to the greatest advantage, making the most of its strengths, counteracting its weaknesses, and correcting its imbalances. The method requires that one constantly pay attention to one's body while doing the movements. Paying attention to movement is seen as so vital that it is considered more important than any other single aspect of the movements.
Breathing
Joseph Pilates believed in circulating the blood so that it could awaken all the cells in the body and carry away the wastes related to fatigue. For the blood to do its work properly, he maintained, it has to be charged with oxygen and purged of waste gases through proper breathing. By this standard, if your heart stops beating during exercise, or if you stop breathing during exercise, there is an error in your practice. Full and thorough inhalation and exhalation are purportedly a part of every Pilates exercise. Pilates saw forced exhalation as the key to full inhalation. “Squeeze out the lungs as you would wring a wet towel dry,” he is reputed to have said.[citation needed] Pilates breathing should be done with concentration, control, and precision. Proper and effective breathing, practitioners assert, not only oxygenates the muscles, but also reduces tension in the upper neck and shoulders. Pilates breathing is described as a posterior lateral breathing, meaning that the practitioner is instructed to breathe deep into the back and sides of his or her rib cage. When the practitioner exhales, they are instructed to note the engagement of their deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles and maintain this engagement as they inhale. Pilates attempts to properly coordinate this breathing practice with movement, including breathing instructions with every exercise. Joseph Pilates stated, “Even if you follow no other instructions, learn to breathe correctly.”
Centering
Pilates called the very large group of muscles in the center of the body – encompassing the abdomen, lower back, hips, and buttocks – the “powerhouse.” All energy for Pilates exercises is said to begin from the powerhouse and flow outward to the limbs. In other words, the Pilates technique asserts that physical energy exerted from the center should coordinate movements of the extremities. Pilates felt that it was important to build a strong powerhouse in order to rely on it in daily living. Modern instructors call the powerhouse the “core”.
Concentration
Pilates demands intense focus. For instance, the inner thighs and pelvic floor may be assessed when doing a standing exercise that tones the triceps. Beginners are instructed to pay careful attention to their bodies, building on very small, delicate fundamental movements and controlled breathing.[citation needed] In 2006, at the Parkinson Center of the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon, the concentration factor of the Pilates method was being studied in providing relief from the degenerative symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
Control
Joseph Pilates built his method on the idea of muscle control. To him, that meant no sloppy, uncontrolled movements. Practitioners are instructed to perform every exercise with the utmost control, including all body parts, to avoid injury and produce positive results. In Joseph Pilates' writings, he very frequently emphasizes not intensity or multiple repetitions of a movement, but proper form for safe, effective results.
Precision
Practitioners assert that every movement in the Pilates method has a purpose. Every instruction is considered vitally important to the success of the whole. To leave out any detail is believed to forsake the intrinsic value of the exercise. The focus is on doing one precise and perfect movement, rather than many halfhearted ones. The goal is for this precision to eventually become second nature, and carry over into everyday life as grace and economy of movement.
All this being said, a qualified Pilates instructor is expected to understand the technique well enough to adapt it to the real-world capabilities of his or her students. Students with physical disabilities, for example, should be given a Pilates regimen intended to improve their methods of physically compensating for their ailment.[citation needed]
Flow or efficiency of movement
Movement is expected to be kept continuous between exercises through the use of appropriate transitions. Once precision has been achieved, the exercises are intended to flow within and into each other in order to build strength and stamina.
Precautions
Pilates during pregnancy can be a highly valuable and beneficial form of exercise, but the use of Pilates in pregnancy should only be undertaken under guidance of a fully trained expert
